Early world or sea maps often showed unknown places with fictional elements such as sea snakes and sea monsters. In addition to fictional islands and mythological figures, the expressions HIC SVNT DRACONES marked the undiscovered areas and motivated explorers to go there.
Is there anything else in the current, technology-based and mapped information society that can be discovered?
What paradigm is followed by the contemporary cartographic practices? How could the discovery further develop on the Internet?
In the course of 2017, servus.at organized an artistic research laboratory on the subject of digital cartography and mapping. Davide Bevilacqua, Veronika Krenn, Hanna Priemetzhofer, Franziska Thurner and Us(h)i Reiter searched for glitches & mistakes in mapping technologies and experimented with situational practices to rediscover the city.
Results, experiments and reflections are presented in the form of a process-based exhibition.
