Der Titel dieses Projekts, „Bodypop“, verweist auf eine zentrale
Schnittstelle, an der die Linzer Künstlerin silvia SUN arbeitet –
PopMusik/Kunst; gleichzeitig nimmt er Bezug auf das gleichnamige Stück
der britischen Koch-Band „The Sonic Catering Band“, einer
Musik aus platzenden Popkörnern, wobei die Musik einem spezifischen
Popcornrezept folgt.
Popcorn, ein weltweit konsumiertes Massenprodukt, steht hier stellvertretend
für die globale Ware Popmusik und deren Produktionsbedingungen; mehr
als je zuvor wird vom Markt für den Markt produziert; das Publikums-Voting
entscheidet, wer zum „Star“ gemacht wird.
„Bodypop“ thematisiert anhand von berstenden Popkörnern
das Streben nach Erfüllung individueller Sehnsüchte, setzt sich
mit den diversen Popstar-Prototypen und Popstar-AspirantInnen auseinander
– und mit der globalen Sehnsucht nach dem im Starruhm vermuteten
Glück.
Popcorn fungiert hier also als Symbol des Identitätsverlustes –
Verlust des „inneren Kerns“, der Substanz – (Transformation
des substantiellen Kerns zur bedeutungslosen, unförmigen, „aufgeblasenen“,
indifferenten Einheitsmasse).
Die Hitze, die das Korn zum Platzen bringt, steht für die Emotionen,
Sehnsüchte, Hoffnungen, die den einzelnen Would-be-Popstar-Kandidaten
so weit bringt, sich fremden Strukturen zu unterwerfen.
„Bodypop“ beschäftigt sich mit der Transformation vom
kleinen Kern zum großen (unförmigen? einförmigen? formlosen?
ausufernden?) Ding.
Und endet in den Niederungen des daily life. Right here. Right now. Vor
dem TV. Und die Hand. Im Popcornsack.
silvia SUN bearbeitet Popcorns zu Popklischeetypen, lässt sie glückselig
werden und ermöglicht uns durch ihre „Poppy Pieces“ ein
„take me home tonight“.

Bodypop”, the project title, makes reference to a central interface
typical for the work of Linz based artist silvia SUN, namely pop music/art;
at the same time, it refers to a piece by the British culinary band, “The
Sonic Catering Band”, which consists of the music made by popping
popcorn, the score of the music being a specific popcorn recipe.
In this case, popcorn, consumed world-wide as a mass product, stands for
the global commodity pop music and offers a reflection of the ruling conditions
of production in the field. More than ever before, the market itself dictates
the rules for production for the market; the voting audience decides who
is to be made a “star”.
With the help of bursting pop corn, “Bodypop” adresses the
striving for the fulfillment of individual desires, takes a close look
at all kinds of prototypical popstars as well as aspiring ones –
and at the global yearning for the happiness ever expected behind stardom.
Therefore, in this case, popcorn works as a symbol for the loss of identity
– the loss of the “inner core”, of substance –
(transformation of the substantial core into meaningless, formless, “blown
up”, indifferent uniform mass).
The heat that makes the corn explode (pop), stands for the emotions, desires,
hopes that induce the individual pop-star candidate to subject to structures
foreign to his/her own nature.
“Bodypop” deals with the transformation of the little core
into a big (deformed? uniform? formless? ever expanding?) thing.
And ends at the seamy side of daily life. Right here. Right now. In front
of the TV. And a hand. Inside the popcorn bag.
silvia SUN makes pop cliché types out of popcorn, lets them achieve
pure bliss and happiness, and even provides us with a “take me home
tonight” experience with her “Poppy pieces”.

The Sonic Catering Band
Since 1996, The Sonic Catering Band have been exploring the links between
musical and culinary processes. Raw food as with sound, is chopped, processed
and mixed into a wholly other form. Recipes almost act as musical scores
from which the band derive their own distinct sound.
The initial purpose of the band was to perform live in restaurants, hidden
away in the kitchens working shift hours. The audience were inherently
involved in the sound process, purely by what they chose on the menu.
After honing their cooking and recording skills, the band started producing
records, the most infamous being their 'First Supper' pizza box set that
housed five plate sized records that each corresponded to a different
course of a meal. The packaging was cold, anonymous and uniform, highlighting
more of an allegiance to mass food manufacturing than the art environment
the band surfaced from.
Each copy of their first album, "1093 Budapest IX., Lónyay
u. 7., Magyarország
(22.09.2002 19.45-20.52)" came with the actual cakes cooked during
the recording session, adding a literal meaning to the term 'disposable
music'. Listeners and audiences alike literally found themselves aurally
and orally aligned to The Sonic Catering Band's output as they consumed
the food they were hearing being prepared. Each recording session results
in a dish of some sort being produced and subsequently consumed by band
or audience.
Recent recordings have seen the band venture into spoken word territory
and improvisation, yet still with food as the central theme. The Sonic
Catering Band up until this year, ran their own record label, Peripheral
Conserve, putting out recordings by other people as well as themselves.
